The magazine gave Tom Dresser of Oak Bluffs a disposable camera and asked him to photograph Island children from his point of view (the driver’s seat) as they boarded his bus on the first day of school in September. Here Hannah Elrick of West Tisbury climbs toward third grade as her mother, Robin, sees her off on State Road. “That first day!” says Tom, a writer who also works at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs. “Yes, I was nervous. Forgot how to turn on the signal lights. Didn’t miss any kids (that I know of). Pleased to see all the happy faces, at least on this first day. Down the road, who knows what I’ll think, but the first day of school captures the innocence and enthusiasm of youngsters about to embark on a great adventure. I’m glad to contribute to that adventure, and hope that the ride on the bus gets them going on the right track. It’s the least I can do.”
