Fourteen years ago, my maiden name โ Nicole Mercier โ appeared on the masthead of this publication in the July issue under the title of intern. At the time I was new to journalism and looking to gain some real-world experience. As a born-and-raised Islander, I felt that Marthaโs Vineyard Magazine, and the Vineyard Gazette Media Group as a whole, was the right place to start.

That summer, editor Nicki Miller, associate editor Nancy Tutko, and art director Alley Moore welcomed me with open arms into their tiny office space on the second floor of the Vineyard Gazette building in downtown Edgartown. I learned the nuts and bolts of producing a publication, was sent out on writing and photography assignments, and helped brainstorm future stories. I loved it all so much, I came back the following summer.
In 2014, fresh out of college, I was hired as a full-time employee. Alley was still the magazineโs art director, Paul Schneider was now editor, Vanessa Czarnecki was senior editor, and I had a new title: editorial assistant. For the next decade I worked closely with this dedicated, tight-knit team to share stories about the Island โ its people, history, wildlife, businesses, and more.ย
As the years passed I continued to hone my skills, and in turn moved up the masthead, becoming assistant editor, associate editor, then managing editor. This issue marks another title change for me: editor.
Nine others have held this role, three of which โ Nicki, Paul, and Vanessa โ I have had the pleasure of working with. Each has left their mark on this special publication, as well as on me, all while maintaining the legacy that is Marthaโs Vineyard Magazine. Iโm honored to have my name added to the ranks. And, more importantly, to continue to share the stories that deserve to be heard.
Not everyone gets to do what they love, where they love, surrounded by a strong support system of family and friends. For that, I am truly grateful.
