Transcendentalist author Henry David Thoreau planted one of the first seeds of simple living when he inspired others to reflect upon its virtues, as he did in his book about the two years he lived in a one-room cabin near Walden Pond. Tisbury residents Peggy Turner Zablotny and Stephen Zablotny are interested in planting a few more seeds.

Well-known artists and graphic designers Peggy and Stephen came up with the concept of “Martha’s Vineyard Seeds” to address what some have dubbed “the trophy house issue” on the Island. “You start looking around. Look at all these buildings using up our fossil fuels and energy,” Peggy says.

During a brainstorming session, they discussed a number of ideas, including planting kudzu, a fast-growing vine, that would quickly and efficiently climb over any obstreperous houses. But instead of trying to hide the problem, they came up with a witty idea to solve it. “Don’t cover it up. Expose it. Look at it and protest, ” says Peggy, who drew the design before Stephen did the color work.
