The Look, Circa 1950

The dog show is a tried-and-true event at the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society’s Livestock Show and Fair, but who knew that it was once also an opportunity to look so good? Take the judge, for example, in his dapper Homburg hat pulled forward and down slightly on the forehead to shield his eyes from the prying pet owners. Not to mention his pipe, saddle shoes, and posture of a canine connoisseur not to be reckoned with. The man deserves a blue ribbon for his flair at the fair.

Nor is he solo in his sartorial splendor. Once upon a time, it seems, the fair was not just another place to show up in baggy cargo shorts, an ill-fitting Chilmark Road Race shirt, and unfortunate Tevas.

We don’t know who these people are, or exactly what year the photo was taken, but there are so many great looks that it’s hard to pick a favorite. Is it the young woman on the left in the high-waisted shorts? Or the mothers in the background in pattern dresses? What about the forward dude in a T-shirt and blazer? To say nothing of the poodle.
