Best of the Vineyard 2012

Everyone has their favorites, from beaches to bars, gift shops to garden centers, hair stylists to seafood restaurants. Here are our readers’ picks in seventy-six categories.

While votes were courtesy of our readers, the write-ups are by Alexandra Bullen, Susan Catling, Vanessa Czarnecki, Linley Dolby, Greg Martino, Simone McCarthy, Jim Miller, Moira Silva, Remy Tumin, and Nancy Tutko. The designation “close runner-up” indicates the runner-up received up to ten votes less than the winner.

On the water

Best Beach: South Beach
Atlantic Drive, Edgartown.
Runner-up: State Beach
Beach Road, Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.

Taste the salt breeze as you head toward South Beach, the crashing waves louder and louder as the anticipation of diving into the water builds. And then you’re in, and every care in the world disappears as you ride the waves. State Beach’s easy-in, easy-out waves keep families at the beach until the sun goes down.

The Seafood Shanty’s extensive menu, waterfront location, and outdoor deck never fail to attract a crowd.

Runner-up: The Net Result
Tisbury Marketplace, 79 Beach Road, Vineyard Haven, 508-693-6071.

A true Vineyarder would sooner starve than eat a sub-par chowder. The new MV Chowder Company ensures we won’t face that dilemma. Better still, they offer both the authentic chowder that purists demand, along with the thick chowder tourists expect. The Net Result has been chowder king for years, though, so look for a rally.

Sushi is one of those things where you want great sushi, or no sushi at all. Sushi that’s just “okay” is the culinary equivalent of a blind date with “a great personality” and could land you in the doctor’s office, feeling betrayed.
